As devoted pet owners and dog lovers, we understand how easy it is for a curious pup to sniff out something sweet. Unfortunately, that "treat" might be dangerous, especially when it comes to chocolate. Accidents can happen even in the most careful households, which is why knowing what to do immediately is essential.
Why Chocolate Is Toxic to Dogs
Chocolate contains two key stimulants - theobromine and caffeine - both of which are toxic to dogs. Unlike humans, dogs metabolise theobromine very slowly, meaning even small amounts can lead to serious health complications. The darker the chocolate, the higher the theobromine content, and the more dangerous it becomes.
Important: Even a small bite of chocolate can pose a risk depending on your dog’s size, age, and overall health.
Actions to Take Immediately
If your dog has eaten chocolate, don’t wait. Take the following steps right away:
Call your vet immediately. Provide details on:
- Your dog’s weight and breed
- The type of chocolate ingested (milk, dark, baking, etc.)
- The approximate amount eaten
Follow your vet’s instructions.
- If your dog is seen within two hours, your vet may induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal to prevent absorption.
- If more than two hours have passed, your dog may require IV fluids, heart medications, or other supportive care depending on symptoms.
Know the Signs of Chocolate Poisoning
Symptoms typically appear within 6–12 hours, but don’t wait for them, early treatment is critical. Watch for:
- Hyperactivity or restlessness
- High heart rate or temperature
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Excessive thirst
- Muscle tremors or twitching
- Seizures
Remember: Quick veterinary care can make all the difference, most dogs make a full recovery when treated promptly.
Keep Chocolate Out of Paw’s Reach
While it’s impossible to watch your dog every second of the day, here are a few prevention tips to minimise the risk:
- Store chocolate high up or in closed cupboards
- Secure bins with tight lids or store them in inaccessible areas
- Be mindful during holidays like Easter, Halloween and Christmas when chocolate is more easily left around
