5 Simple Ways to Be a More Sustainable Pet Owner

Tips from the team at Harringtons, because we care for the planet as much as we care for our pets.

At Harringtons, we believe doing the right thing should come naturally, whether it's choosing great-quality, wholesome food for your pets, or taking small steps to look after the planet we all share.

We’ve been making good progress on our journey towards sustainability, from how we make and package our food, to how we deliver it to your door. But there’s always more to do. That’s why we’ve pulled together a few honest, easy ideas that can help you make a difference too.

Cut Back on Frequent Orders

Every delivery has an environmental footprint, and let’s be honest, fewer orders means fewer boxes to unpack too.

One of the simplest ways to help is by using our pet food subscription service. You can set it up to send exactly what you need, when you need it - every month, like clockwork. That means fewer one-off orders, fewer trips to the shop, and peace of mind knowing your pet’s food is always sorted.

Buy in Bulk Where You Can

Buying in bulk is one of the easiest ways to cut down on packaging and reduce the number of deliveries, which helps lower your environmental impact and keeps you well-stocked at home.

At Harringtons, we’ve got a great range of larger pack options to make this easy for you, including:

  • Wet dog food bumper packs – packed with natural goodness, and perfect for keeping mealtimes simple.

  • Wet cat food bundles – ideal if you’ve got a hungry feline (or two!) and want to avoid running low.

  • Big bags of dry dog food – available in sizes up to 15kg, so you can feed your dog their favourite recipe for longer.

  • Boxes of dog treats – you won’t just get one pack, but you can get a whole box of up to 9 packs (depending on which treats you buy). Great for rewarding good behaviour (and having a stash ready when you need it).

By buying more in one go, you’ll reduce waste, save money in the long run, and enjoy the peace of mind that your cupboard is always stocked with your pet’s favourites.

Recycle What You Can

We’re proud to say that 98% of our packaging is recyclable, and we’re working hard on that last 2%. So when you’re done feeding your furry friend, check the label and recycle wherever possible.

If you're not sure where your local recycling points are, your council website is a good place to start. And keep an eye on our Sustainability page for updates, we’re always looking for ways to do better.

Pick Up Litter on Your Walks

It’s not just about what we do at home, small acts outside can have a big impact too.

When you’re out walking your dog, try using compostable poo bags to reduce plastic waste. And if you’re feeling extra helpful, bring a spare bag and pick up a bit of litter on your route, it’s a small gesture that helps keep your local area clean for everyone.

Your dog gets a good sniff, you do a good deed. Win-win.

Choose a Carbon Negative Pet Food Brand

In 2020, Harringtons became the first major UK pet food company to be certified Carbon Negative.

That means we offset more carbon than we produce, covering our manufacturing, offices, deliveries and more. We’re doing everything we can to tread more lightly, from using responsibly sourced ingredients to improving our energy use.

So when you choose Harringtons, you’re not just choosing great-quality, natural food. You’re choosing a company that’s genuinely trying to do right by the planet.
