5 Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe During the Darker Months

The colder weather of autumn and winter brings with it shorter days, meaning evening and morning walkies are less likely to be in daylight. Take a look at our top tips below for keeping you and your furry friend safe during darker dog walks.

  1. Make sure both you and your pooch are visible. A reflective collar, lead or coat will make sure your dog is easily seen, while wearing bright and reflective clothing yourself will ensure you are both spotted by motorists and other walkers. Go even brighter with LED collars and leads which will make you and your pet impossible to miss.
  2. Your mobile phone is extra useful – the torch app means you can avoid uneven ground and hazards – plus you can spot where your dog goes to the toilet!
  3. Plan your route before you go, sticking to roads lit by streetlights rather than dark and bumpy pathways. Only take your dog on walks they are familiar with and save new routes for sunshine.
  4. Always walk towards traffic. This means you will be able to see any oncoming cars in plenty of time and can move if you need to.
  5. Keeping your dog on a shorter lead will keep them close by and safe from any dangers that you might not be able to see.
